I believe this will be my first post in the “Consumption” category, so using an Attack on Titan quote felt the most fitting. Today I would like to talk about some of the anime shows I have finished this year.
Plenty of people have plenty of opinions when it comes to anime. For me I have seen good anime, I have seen bad anime. On the whole, I just wish I had seen more anime.
Like most people, my first glimpse into anything anime was as a child watching the first season of Pokémon. I remember dabbling with the likes of Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Cardcaptor Sakura and, possibly the one that lives in my heart of hearts even now, Flint the Time Detective (Boom ba, Boom ba, Booom ba). Although at the time I had no idea what anime was, these were all just cartoons as far as I was concerned.
Then university happened. Even then I didn’t dabble too far out of my comfort zone. Whilst my housemates were devouring (see what I did there) Attack on Titan as it was being released, I was binging Death Note. Since then I’ve picked up the odd show, and if I’m honest, nothing will ever top Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood for me.
But that was the past. This year my consumption of anime and mange has drastically shot up (there will most definitely be a manga post in the near future). So here is a very brief list, in no particular order, of some of the shows I have enjoyed this year.
- Sasaki and Peeps – “Sasaki is a middle-aged office worker living in Japan. Feeling drained by the vapid corporate world, he heads to the pet shop in search of a new companion. There he finds an adorable bird named Peeps and takes him home. But Sasaki quickly learns that Peeps isn’t your average bird…he’s a powerful mage from another world! Together, they embark on a magical adventure filled with swords and sorcery.”
Oh this show. For such an absurd premise, it was just oh so relatable. A fun, funny and often wholesome show that has me very invested for season 2. - BIRDIE WING -Golf Girls’ Story- “Fore! After Eve’s first meet up with Aoi on the grass left her in defeat, she’s had her eyes set on a rematch to return the favor. Both these up and coming golfers are highly skilled, highly unique and most of all, highly competitive. With dreams of making it pro, a rivalry is getting in full swing as they both battle it out in the biggest tournaments.”
This show made me fully SQUEEEE. And I do not say that lightly. It is an utterly ridiculous show, Street-Golf, Mobsters, Some reveals worthy of The Jeremy Kyle Show. This show has it all. - BARTENDER Glass of God – “At Eden Hall, each glass has a story. A quiet bar lies tucked away in the streets of Tokyo, and it seems only the most desperate souls burdened by their own troubles manage to find its doors. But after a glass of God poured by the brilliant bartender Ryu, they leave renewed. Ryu has a gift—he knows how to soothe the soul with the perfect drink. Who will he meet next?”
This show is just so evocative. Visually stunning with a captivating yet simple plot. The true definition of comforting. - Attack on Titan – “Known in Japan as Shingeki no Kyojin, many years ago, the last remnants of humanity were forced to retreat behind the towering walls of a fortified city to escape the massive, man-eating Titans that roamed the land outside their fortress. Only the heroic members of the Scouting Legion dared to stray beyond the safety of the walls – but even those brave warriors seldom returned alive. Those within the city clung to the illusion of a peaceful existence until the day that dream was shattered, and their slim chance at survival was reduced to one horrifying choice: kill – or be devoured!”
What more can be said about Attack On Titan that hasn’t already been said? The show is compelling, graphic and has more twists in it than… a… very twisty thing. Anyway, it’s been on my watch list since Uni so there’s an immense sense of satisfaction at finally finishing it. And it definitely lived up to the hype.
Clearly I have impeccable taste.
